Business growth with Oli Luke
If you’ve ever felt like you’re trying to make your business appeal to everyone—but somehow “everyone” isn’t falling over themselves to buy from you—you’re not alone.
So often in business, we think that casting a wide net will help us catch more customers. But here’s the thing—business growth is rarely about being broad… Unless you’re Greggs.
Everyone loves Greggs.
No, success is about being specific. Really specific. And that’s exactly what I explored in my latest Focus on the Fun Stuff podcast episode with Oli Luke. Oli runs a hugely successful marketing business, but instead of working with any and every business owner, he’s built a niche within a niche—serving privately owned hearing care practices in North America.
Why Narrowing Your Audience Works
When Oli first stumbled into the hearing care industry (no, he’s NOT an audiologist!), he quickly saw that many professionals in the field were brilliant at what they did but struggled with the business side of things.
At the same time, big brands like Apple and Costco were stepping into the hearing care space, making it even tougher for independent businesses to compete. That’s when Oli saw his sweet spot—not in serving just any business, but in supporting the entrepreneurial owners of hearing care practices who wanted to grow, not just survive.
The Market – Message – Media Principle
On the podcast, Oli and I talked about one of the most effective marketing frameworks out there—the Market – Message – Media principle:
Market – Instead of trying to serve everyone, Oli honed in on a very specific audience. Defining the right market was his first step before doing anything else.
Message – Once he had his market, he crafted a message that spoke directly to their struggles and positioned his services as the perfect solution.
Media – He focused only on the marketing channels that reached his ideal audience, cutting out all the noise and wasted effort.
Trying to reach everyone is exhausting. But narrowing your focus will make your marketing and growth way more effective.
Key Takeaways from the Episode
✨ Less is More: The broader you go, the more you compete with the big players. The more specific you are, the easier it is to stand out.
🎯 Becoming an Expert: Serving a niche audience helps you become the go-to authority in your space, which makes attracting the right clients a whole lot easier.
💡 Strategic Marketing: When you know exactly who you’re talking to, your message becomes clearer and lands with the right people.
🚀 Growth Through Specialization: By finding a specific group of people to serve, you create a reputation that leads to long-term success.
Why You Should Tune In
If you feel like your marketing efforts are all over the place or you’re struggling to get traction with your audience, this episode is for you. Oli’s journey shows just how powerful it is to choose the right market and speak directly to their needs.
So, if you’re still casting the net too wide, maybe it’s time to redefine who your ideal customer really is. Need help figuring it out?

Talking business with Joy Zarine - Ep17
Focus on the Fun Stuff Podcast: How to Reignite Your Passion for Business with Joy Zarine (episode 17)
Let’s be real—running a business isn’t always fun.
In fact, if we’re being honest, a lot of the time it feels like the opposite.
Focus on the Fun Stuff Podcast: How to Reignite Your Passion for Business with Joy Zarine (episode 17)
Let’s be real—running a business isn’t always fun.
In fact, if we’re being honest, a lot of the time it feels like the opposite. The passion and curiosity that fueled us in the beginning often take a backseat to the daily grind. Instead of innovating, dreaming, and creating, we find ourselves stuck in a cycle of putting out fires and just keeping things ticking over. Sound familiar?
That’s why my conversation with Joy Zarine on Focus on the Fun Stuff was such a breath of fresh air. Joy—bestselling author, customer experience expert, and founder of DesignJoyandPrint.com—has spent over 20 years helping businesses build revenue-driving assets. But more than that, she knows how to ensure work life isn’t just successful, but also exciting.
Breaking Free from “What Works”
One of the biggest takeaways from my chat with Joy was this: just because something is “working” doesn’t mean you have to keep doing it forever. So many of us feel obligated to stay in our lane, afraid to take risks or explore new opportunities because we’re too busy maintaining what we’ve built.
But here’s the kicker: playing it safe can be the very thing that stifles our growth and kills our passion.
Joy shared her own story of branding hospitality businesses for years—until the Covid-19 pandemic forced her to pivot. What could have been a crisis turned into an opportunity for reinvention. Instead of resisting change, she embraced it, and in doing so, rediscovered her excitement and sense of purpose. Her business evolved, and so did her joy for the work she was doing.
Three Steps to Bring the Fun Back to Your Business
Feeling like you’ve lost the spark in your own business? Joy suggests three simple but powerful steps to reignite your passion in 2025:
1. Make One Bold Move Each Week1
Big changes don’t happen overnight, but they do happen one step at a time. Ask yourself: What’s one bold move I can make this week? Then go ahead and do it. It could be testing a new idea, reaching out to a potential collaborator, or stepping outside your comfort zone in a way you’ve been avoiding. Small, consistent action leads to big shifts.
2. Dedicate 20% of Your Time to Curiosity
Carve out at least 20% of your time to dream bigger, explore new ideas, and experiment with what could come next for you and your business. Instead of only focusing on what’s urgent, make room for what’s exciting.
3. Picture Yourself at 90
Fast forward to your 90-year-old self looking back on your life. Are you celebrating a life full of passion, fun, and freedom? Or are you regretting that you never took the leap to try something new? Let that perspective be your guide. If future-you wishes you’d made a change, start today.
Reverse Engineer the Life You Want
Joy’s final piece of advice? Don’t wait for circumstances to force you to evolve—start now. Reverse engineer the life you truly want. Make time for curiosity. Let yourself imagine what your business could look like if you let go of limiting beliefs. Then take small, actionable steps to bring that vision to life.
If you need help figuring out where to start, I’d love to help—drop me a message, and let’s chat. Here’s to rediscovering the fun in 2025!

Let’s talk about sleep baby.
The Power of Sleep: How Prioritising Rest Transformed My Productivity
Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Each night when I go to sleep I die. And the next morning when I wake up I’m re-born.”
Sleep is something we all know is important—but let’s be honest, it’s also the first thing we sacrifice when life gets busy.
Late nights, early starts, and the feeling that there just aren’t enough hours in the day lead us to cut corners on rest.
But here’s the truth: when we improve our sleep, everything else improves too.
A month ago, I decided to double down and make sleep a real priority. Why? Because studies show that getting six hours of sleep or less can reduce productivity by a staggering 40%—and I definitely don’t want that.
So, here’s what I’ve done to transform my sleep (and my productivity).
My Sleep Strategy
1. A Consistent Bedtime
Going to bed at the same time every night has been a game-changer. My body now knows when to start winding down, and in turn, my mornings feel more energized. The more consistent my sleep schedule, the better my decision-making has been.
2. Magnesium for Deeper Sleep
Magnesium is a powerhouse supplement for improving sleep quality. I take it before bed, and it’s helped me fall asleep faster and sleep deeper. If you haven’t tried it yet, it’s worth looking into!
3. Reducing Screen Time Before Bed
An hour before bed, I put my phone and laptop away. The blue light from screens tricks the brain into thinking it’s daytime, which stops melatonin production—the hormone you need to fall asleep. Cutting screen time before bed has had a huge impact on my sleep quality.
4. Creating a Wind-Down Routine
Before bed, I read a book to quiet my mind. Anything that helps you slow down and disconnect from the day works—whether it’s reading, meditation, or gentle stretching. Give your brain a break; it deserves it!
5. Writing Down To-Do’s for Tomorrow
If there’s something on my mind for the next day, I write it down instead of letting it linger in my head. Getting it onto paper clears mental space and makes it easier to switch off and relax.
6. Practicing Gratitude
Most nights, I write down three good things that happened that day. It’s a small habit that shifts my focus toward the positives, even on rough days. Looking back at my weekly gratitude list has been a great reminder of all the good things happening in my life.
7. Tracking My Sleep with Whoop
One of the biggest game-changers has been using my Whoop band to track my sleep quality. It gives real-time data on how well I’m resting and shows the impact of these changes on my recovery. It’s made me hyper-aware of how small tweaks can massively improve my energy and focus.
If you’re curious about how Whoop can help you optimize your sleep and recovery, you can try it free for a month here.
Prioritising Sleep = Prioritising Success
Sleep isn’t just about rest—it’s an investment in your success. Since prioritising it, I’ve been waking up feeling more energised, focused, and ready to take on the week (minus the occasional Christmas party 🤣).
I want the same for you. Make sleep a priority, and you’ll be amazed at how much more you can achieve.
Go win the week—and your sleep!
Em
A little Christmas celebration never hurts .

Self-Care Strategies for Busy Professionals
Balancing Work and Well-being
In today's fast-paced world, it's easy for busy professionals to prioritise work over their own well-being.
Self-Care Strategies for Busy Professionals: Balancing Work and Well-being
In today's fast-paced world, it's easy for busy professionals to prioritise work over their own well-being. Whenever we board a plane, we are told - in the event of an emergency, please secure your own oxygen mask before attempting to help others. So why is it so hard for us to do this in everyday life? The demands of business, family, friends, and life suddenly hit us like a ton of bricks, and for so many of us, the default option is to put yourself and your needs to the back of a very long queue. In this blog, I am diving into the importance of self-care and offer practical strategies for maintaining mental and physical well-being amidst a hectic work schedule. All aboard? Let’s do this.
✈️ Prioritise Self-Care:
Make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. Set aside time daily to focus on activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul. Whether it's practising mindfulness, exercising, zoning out with a good book or indulging in a hobby, prioritise activities that recharge your batteries and promote overall well-being. A 20-minute walk around the block at lunchtime could make all the difference to you checking in with yourself and not strapping yourself in on a one-way trip to burnout land. I've been there - and it's not worth a revisit.
✈️ Practice Mindfulness:
Incorporate mindfulness techniques into your daily routine to reduce stress and increase resilience. Take short breaks throughout the day to practice deep breathing, meditation, or simply being present in the moment. Cultivating mindfulness can help you stay grounded, focused, and better equipped to handle the challenges of a busy workday. I am not the most “Woo Woo” of people - however starting my day with mindfulness actually has improved my focus. Maybe the Woo Woo brigade are on to something.
✈️ Set Boundaries:
Learn to say no to excessive demands on your time and energy. Set clear boundaries around work hours, emails, and commitments outside of work. Establishing boundaries allows you to protect your personal time and prevent burnout, ensuring that you have the energy to show up as your best self in both your professional and personal life.
✈️ Practice Self-Compassion:
Be kind to yourself and practice self-compassion, especially during times of stress or overwhelm. Instead of being self-critical or judgmental, treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a friend facing similar challenges. Remember that it's okay to prioritise your own well-being and take breaks when needed.
✈️ Nurture Relationships:
Don't neglect your relationships amidst a busy work schedule. Make time to connect with loved ones, whether it's scheduling regular date nights with your partner, catching up with friends over coffee, or spending quality time with family. Nurturing meaningful relationships provides emotional support and helps maintain a healthy work-life balance.
✈️ Practice Gratitude:
Cultivate an attitude of gratitude by focusing on the positives in your life, even during challenging times. Take time each day to reflect on what you're grateful for, whether it's a supportive team at work, a beautiful sunset, or a simple moment of joy. Practising gratitude can help shift your mindset from stress and negativity to appreciation and abundance.
✈️ Final Thoughts
Self-care is essential for maintaining balance and well-being in the midst of a busy professional life. By prioritising self-care, practising mindfulness, setting boundaries, nurturing relationships, and cultivating gratitude, busy professionals can ensure they have the energy and resilience to thrive both at work and in life.

Mastering Time Management: Strategies for Busy Entrepreneurs
We have all heard the saying, “Time waits for no man”, and in this blog, I delve into how to master time - and make it your little erm, friend.
Time is perhaps the most precious resource for busy entrepreneurs. With countless tasks, meetings, and deadlines vying for attention, effective time management becomes paramount for success.
🚨Prioritise Your Tasks:
Start by identifying your most important tasks and prioritising them based on their urgency and importance. I am a big fan of the Eisenhower Matrix to categorise tasks into four quadrants: urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, and neither urgent nor important.
Focus your energy on tasks that fall into the urgent and important quadrant, and delegate or eliminate tasks that are less critical.
⏰ Time Blocking:
This has been a game changer for me. For the longest time I was battling my schedule dealing with everyone elses needs. Now time block help me to ultimately win the week… here’s how:
Allocate specific blocks of time for different activities throughout your day. This technique, known as time blocking, helps you structure your schedule and dedicate focused time to important tasks without distractions. Set aside blocks of time for essential activities such as email management, client meetings, and creative work, ensuring that each task receives the attention it deserves.
⌚️Use Technology Wisely:
Take advantage of technology tools and apps to streamline your workflow and boost productivity. Utilise project management tools like Asana or Trello to track tasks and collaborate with team members.
Use calendar apps like Google Calendar or Outlook to schedule appointments and set reminders. Automation tools can also help automate repetitive tasks, saving you time and effort in the long run.
🍅 Practice the Pomodoro Technique:
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that involves breaking your workday into short, focused intervals (typically 25 minutes) followed by short breaks. It does take some getting used to - but if you like it - you may end up living by it.
During each Pomodoro interval, commit to working on a single task without interruptions or distractions. After completing a Pomodoro, take a short break to rest and recharge before starting the next interval. This technique helps maintain focus and productivity while preventing burnout.
🚫 Learn to Say No:
Hello Game Changer… It’s So GOOD to meet you!
As an entrepreneur, it's essential to prioritise your own well-being and avoid overcommitting yourself. Learn to say no to non-essential tasks or commitments that don't align with your goals or values.
Setting boundaries and managing your workload effectively will help prevent overwhelm and ensure that you have the time and energy to focus on what truly matters.
Final Thoughts
Mastering time management is a crucial skill for busy entrepreneurs looking to maximise their productivity and achieve a better work-life balance. By implementing strategies like prioritising tasks, time blocking, leveraging technology, practising the Pomodoro Technique, and learning to say no, entrepreneurs can take control of their time and focus on what truly matters, setting themselves up for success in their business ventures.

Cultivating an Entrepreneurial Mindset: Habits of Successful Business Owners
Success in entrepreneurship isn't just about having a great idea or a sound business plan - it's also about cultivating the right mindset and habits. In this blog, I will dive into the mindset and habits that distinguish successful entrepreneurs from the rest, offering actionable advice on how readers can develop these traits to thrive in their own ventures.
🌱 Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity:
Successful entrepreneurs understand that failure is an inevitable part of the journey. Instead of viewing failure as a setback, they see it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve. Cultivate a mindset of resilience and perseverance, and don't let fear of failure hold you back from taking calculated risks and pursuing your goals.
🐙 Practice Self-Discipline and Consistency:
Consistency is key to success in entrepreneurship. Successful business owners maintain a disciplined approach to their work, setting clear goals and priorities and sticking to them consistently. Develop daily routines and habits that support your long-term goals, whether it's dedicating time to strategic planning, networking, or personal development.
📺 Foster a Growth Mindset:
Entrepreneurs with a growth mindset believe that their abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and effort. They embrace challenges, seek out feedback, and view setbacks as opportunities for growth. Cultivate a growth mindset by adopting a positive attitude towards learning, embracing new challenges, and reframing setbacks as learning experiences. By listening to podcasts and YouTube videos featuring top entrepreneurs, I've absorbed their mindsets and behaviours. Whether at the gym, in the garden, or on a drive, these insights have influenced my actions, driving personal and professional growth.
🙌 Surround Yourself with a Supportive Network:
Successful entrepreneurs understand the importance of surrounding themselves with a supportive network of mentors, peers, and advisors. Seek out opportunities to connect with other entrepreneurs, join networking groups or mastermind programs, and build relationships with individuals who can offer guidance, support, and encouragement along your entrepreneurial journey.
🔍 Focus on Continuous Improvement:
Continuous improvement is the cornerstone of entrepreneurship, just like fitness - it's a journey of steady growth and evolution. While quick wins can be gratifying, the real power lies in consistent progress. Over the past few months, I have been on my own fitness journey and the huge wins are from the small, consistent changes.
Successful business owners understand this principle and are dedicated to continuously improving themselves and their businesses. They actively seek opportunities to innovate, refine strategies, and stay ahead of the curve. Invest in your personal and professional development, pursue new knowledge and skills, and embrace a mindset of lifelong learning and adaptability.
Final Thoughts
Cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset is essential for success in today's competitive business landscape. By embracing failure as a learning opportunity, practising self-discipline and consistency, fostering a growth mindset, surrounding yourself with a supportive network, and focusing on continuous improvement, you can develop the habits and traits that distinguish successful entrepreneurs from the rest.

The Art of Delegation: How to Delegate Effectively and Empower Your Team
Delegating tasks effectively is a critical skill for any business leader, and in this blog, Emma shares her expertise on delegation strategies. She emphasises the importance of delegation for business growth and offers practical tips on how to delegate tasks efficiently while empowering your team and boosting productivity.
Understand the Importance of Delegation:
Delegation is not just about offloading tasks—it's about empowering your team members, fostering their growth, and freeing up your own time to focus on high-impact activities. Recognise that you can't do everything yourself and that effective delegation is essential for scaling your business and achieving long-term success.
Identify Tasks to Delegate:
Start by identifying tasks that can be delegated without compromising quality or results. Focus on tasks that are time-consuming, repetitive, or outside your area of expertise. Delegating these tasks will allow you to prioritise strategic initiatives and focus on activities that drive growth and innovation.
Choose the Right Person for the Job:
When delegating tasks, consider each team member's skills, strengths, and workload. Assign tasks to individuals who have the necessary expertise and capacity to complete them effectively. Provide clear instructions, expectations, and deadlines to ensure successful outcomes.
Communicate Effectively:
Effective communication is key to successful delegation. Clearly articulate the task requirements, desired outcomes, and any relevant guidelines or expectations. Encourage open dialogue and ensure that team members feel comfortable asking questions or seeking clarification as needed.
Trust and Empower Your Team:
Trust your team members to take ownership of delegated tasks and make decisions independently. Empower them to use their judgment and creativity to overcome challenges and achieve desired outcomes. Provide support and guidance when needed, but avoid micromanaging or hovering over their shoulders.
Provide Feedback and Recognition:
Regularly check in with team members to monitor progress, provide feedback, and offer support as needed. Recognise and celebrate their achievements and contributions, reinforcing a culture of appreciation and empowerment within the team.
Delegation is a powerful tool for business growth and team empowerment. By mastering the art of delegation and implementing effective strategies, you can free up valuable time, empower your team members, and drive productivity and success in your business.

The Ultimate Guide to Outsourcing for Small Businesses - 2024 Edition
In the ever-evolving landscape of entrepreneurship, small businesses face a myriad of challenges in their quest for growth and success. One of the most significant hurdles they encounter is the overwhelming burden of managing day-to-day tasks while striving to achieve their long-term goals.
Fortunately, outsourcing has emerged as a powerful solution for small businesses seeking to streamline operations, increase efficiency, and focus on core activities. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the world of outsourcing and explore how small businesses can leverage this strategy to scale their operations effectively.
Understanding Outsourcing:
Outsourcing involves delegating certain tasks or functions to external service providers rather than handling them in-house. This approach allows businesses to access specialised expertise, reduce overhead costs, and free up valuable time and resources for strategic initiatives.
The Benefits of Outsourcing for Small Businesses:
🤑 Cost Savings: By outsourcing non-core functions such as administrative tasks, customer support, call answering or IT services, small businesses can significantly reduce their operational expenses. External service providers often offer competitive pricing structures, allowing businesses to access top-notch services without the hefty price tag associated with hiring full-time employees (goodbye NI & pension contributions!).
🤓 Access to Specialised Expertise: Outsourcing enables small businesses to tap into a vast pool of talent and expertise. Whether it's digital marketing, graphic design, or accounting services, businesses can find experienced professionals who specialise in their specific industry or niche.
🚀 Increased Efficiency: Delegating repetitive or time-consuming tasks to external providers frees up internal resources, allowing small businesses to focus on high-value activities that drive growth and innovation. This enhanced efficiency can lead to improved productivity, faster turnaround times, and ultimately, greater profitability.
💻 Scalability: Outsourcing provides small businesses with the flexibility to scale their operations up or down as needed. Whether it's seasonal fluctuations in demand or rapid business growth, outsourcing allows businesses to adapt quickly without the constraints of hiring and training new staff.
My Insights on Outsourcing for Small Businesses:
As a seasoned entrepreneur and founder of MiPA, an award-winning virtual PA company, I have alot of experience helping small businesses harness the power of outsourcing.
Here are some practical tips for small businesses looking to outsource effectively:
1. Assess Your Needs: Start by evaluating your business processes and identifying areas where outsourcing could provide the most significant benefits. Whether it's administrative support, customer service, or marketing assistance, prioritise tasks that are essential but time-consuming.
2. Choose the Right Partners: When selecting outsourcing partners, look for reputable providers with a track record of delivering high-quality services. Sally next door's teenage daughter may be a lovely person, and in need of pocket money - but she may not be the right person to deliver exactly what you need! Take the time to research potential vendors, read client testimonials, and ask for referrals to ensure you're partnering with trusted professionals who align with your business goals.
3. Communicate Clearly: Effective communication is key to successful outsourcing relationships. Clearly define your expectations, goals, and timelines upfront, and maintain open lines of communication throughout the engagement. Regular check-ins and feedback sessions can help ensure that both parties are aligned and working towards shared objectives.
4. Monitor Performance: Keep track of key performance metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of your outsourcing arrangements. Are tasks being completed on time and to the desired standard? Are there any areas for improvement or optimisation? Regular performance reviews can help identify opportunities for refinement and ensure that outsourcing continues to add value to your business.
